College Scholarships

collgeaheadIn our first 75 years, the Eleanor Campbell Charitable Fund, (formerly the Deering Foundation) has awarded more than $800,000 in scholarships to hundreds of deserving local resident students. Almost all of them are graduates of the Deering-Hillsboro and the John Stark High schools.
The Campbell Fund scholarships are competitive and must be applied for in the early spring of the senior year of high school. The criteria for award of a scholarship include consideration of a strong academic record, financial need, personal dedication to the pursuit of excellence, and contributions to the community. Additional consideration is given to those preparing for medical and related service fields or the ministry.
The deadline for applying is April 15, for scholarships awarded for the fall semester of that year. It is imperative that the student be aware that the application must be completed in its entirety. There is a checklist of items that need to be included with the application, to assist the student.
The number of awards varies from year to year, but in recent years has been between 20 and 25 students. Awards are renewable while a student is in their early years of college, but renewals are not automatic and are based on similar criteria as the initial award. The scholarship winners are announced at the respective high schools on their traditional graduation award ceremonies.
